• KITTEN FOSTERS NEEDED! Sign-up online and come pick up a litter today!

Kitten season is in full swing and the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter needs your help! We are in need of short-term fosters (1-8 weeks) for kittens and pregnant mamas that are too young to be adopted. Kittens will return to the shelter when they are 8 weeks old and two pounds, so you'll know exactly how long you will have them.

Why should I foster?
Fosters are the reason we are able to save so many lives each year!
Fostering is a great option for people that have always wanted to volunteer at the shelter, but that may not have the time to come in and help regularly. Fostering also allows you to experience all the joys of owning a kitten without having to make a lifetime commitment to the animal.
Most of all--it's so much fun!

Do I have to have a lot of experience with young or pregnant cats?
Not at all. Our staff will go over the specific needs of each animal you decide to foster, and a foster care handbook is available as well. The shelter's foster Facebook group is an excellent place to ask questions and share experiences with other fosters.

Will the shelter provide me with everything I need?
We will provide fosters with any medications and veterinary care their animals need. You will need to purchase food and other supplies such as litter, toys, and bedding (old towels work just fine!). Depending on availability, we may sometimes have crates or carriers that you can borrow as well. All fostering-related expenses are tax-deductible though, so keep your receipts!

Can I foster animals if I have other pets at home?
Absolutely! We recommend that you keep your foster animals in their own space. Most fosters use a puppy- or kitten-proofed bathroom, utility room, or spare bedroom to house their animals. Consider that some animals may have to be kept separate from your pets for up to two weeks to prevent the potential spread of illness.

I want to foster! How do I get started?

1. Fill out a foster application online at http://pets.wilco.org/Volunteer/FosterCareApp/tabid/3330/Default.aspx or in-person at the shelter.
2. After your application is reviewed, you will receive a welcome email with a link to join our foster Facebook groups and a link to sign-up for our weekly foster newsletter.
3. Choose an animal or litter that you'd like to foster! Animals in need of foster are posted in our foster Facebook groups and weekly newsletters. If you don't have a particular animal or litter in mind, you can also come in to the shelter and let us know you'd like to foster--we'll gladly help you out!
