Hi! I'm Gary! For the past 7 years I've worked as a classroom music teacher in NYC public schools and the National Training Manager and then Director of Curriculum for leading music ed non profit Little Kids Rock. I've taught over 500 students how to play guitar and uke and have trained 100s of music teachers on how to play and teach these instruments in the classroom. This has given me so much insight into how to engage students of all ages and differentiate my approach to meet their various needs.
I've recently moved to Austin, TX and am taking on new private students. Lessons can take place both in your home or in my studio. We can also do check ins between lessons through Skype, Facetime or Google Hangout.

Gary Heimbauer's Bio:
Gary's love of music began when he was just a toddler, listening to Elvis Presley on his Grandparents' record player. He soon after got a guitar for Christmas and began to imitate his first idol. When he was six his mother bought him some guitar lessons, but this initial training turned him off to the instrument for many years due to its teacher-centric approach with a pre-mature focus on technical studies and note reading. This experience has been the fire behind his life's mission as an educator, motivating him to find ways of facilitating learning that take into account, first and foremost, the natural interests of each student.
In addition to being an active performing musician having played at venues such as Rockwood Music Hall, the Highline Ballroom and the Mountain Jam Festival, Gary has been teaching privately and in classroom settings for more than 10 years. From 2006-2010, Gary taught at Day Jams Music Camp and the School of Rock while getting his degree in Music Education. From 2011-2014 he taught Modern Band and General Music to students in Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade in a New York City Public School where he earned tenure. Although he thrived in the classroom, he left to become the Director of Curriculum for Little Kids Rock from 2014-2016, where he was able to spread the message of student-centered music in the classroom across the country, training public school music teachers in over 15 cities and in Haiti and Australia. At the same time he completed his Master's degree in Music and Education at Teacher's College, Columbia University. Gary is excited to have recently moved to Austin, TX - a dream city for musicians and music lovers! In his spare time he enjoys skateboarding, bike riding, and cooking.
